Description
Nitric oxide (NO) is a soluble gas and signaling molecule synthesized continuously from L-arginine in various cell types. In blood vessels, NO maintains normal endothelial function through the modulation of vascular dilator tone, regulation of local cell growth and inflammatory processes, and the inhibition of blood platelet aggregation. Impaired synthesis and excessive degradation of NO are largely the result of increased oxidative stress, which contributes to endothelial dysfunction, hypertension, and an increased risk of life-threatening cardiovascular events. Supporting NO bioavailability in the blood vessels is an important consideration for blood pressure control and cardiovascular health.
- L-arginine is the essential substrate required for nitric oxide (NO) biosynthesis, and may improve endothelial function through increased NO bioavailability.*
- As a product of L-arginine oxidation, L-citrulline can be recycled back to L-arginine for production of NO.* L-citrulline is also thought to increase the activity of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), the enzyme that catalyzes NO production from L-arginine in endothelial cells.*
- Recognized for a diverse range of therapeutic benefits and cytoprotective activities, L-taurine is thought to improve endothelial function largely through its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and vasodilatory properties.
